Two candidates were proposed for the appointment as a Judge of the Court of Justice
On 11 May, the President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, Marcela Kosová, announced the election of a candidate for the position of Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). Authorized proposers were able to submit nominations until 11 June 2026.
The term of office of a Judge at the Court of Justice is six years, with the possibility of reappointment. The current Judge, Miroslav Gavalec, has held this position since 7 October 2021.
Within the established deadline, three nominations were submitted for two candidates. Judicial Council members Ľuboš Kunay and Vladimír Monok nominated Andrea Moravčíková as a candidate for a judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). Judicial Council members Marián Fečík and Peter Bebej, as well as the Slovak Bar Association (SAK), submitted proposals for the reappointment of the current ECJ Judge Miroslav Gavalec.
The Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic will decide on the candidates on 11 August 2026, following their public hearing.
Judges of the Court of Justice of the European Union are appointed after consultation with a committee whose task, pursuant to Article 255 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (the so-called “255 Committee“), is to provide an opinion on the suitability of candidates to perform this function.
