The President of the Judicial Council, Marcela Kosová, announced on June 26, 2025, an election for one candidate for judge of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on behalf of the Slovak Republic. Authorized proposers were able to submit candidate nominations until August 22, 2025. By this deadline, the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic had not received a single nomination for a candidate for judge of the ECHR. For this reason, the election scheduled for September 16, 2025, will not take place.

“A candidate for judge who is to serve at the ECHR in the future must meet strict requirements established by the legal system of the Slovak Republic. The candidate should be a prominent figure in the field of law who also meets high standards of moral integrity. Further criteria for candidates are also set by the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and these must be taken into account by authorized proposers when nominating individual candidates,” Marcela Kosová reminded.

The Judicial Council must submit three candidates for judge of the ECHR to the Government of the Slovak Republic. Since the Judicial Council elected two candidates at its June meeting, namely Branislav Jablonka and Ondrej Laciak, the President of the Judicial Council will announce a new election for one candidate for judge of the ECHR.
