The Judicial Council Delegation Participated in the General Assembly of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary
The General Assembly of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary was held in the capital of Latvia from June 4 to 6, 2025. The central topic of the General Assembly was "Fighting Threats to the Rule of Law". The Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic was represented by its Vice President Ayše Pružinec Eren, and Tomáš Ľalík, a member of the Judicial Council. As part of the program, the Judicial Council delegation was also received by the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic in Riga, Branislav Pavlovič.
The first day of negotiations was a closed meeting intended only for ENCJ members. One of its points was the report on the disbursement of funds from the ENCJ Auditors. The members approved the membership fees for individual judicial councils. The first day resulted in the unanimous election of a new member of the Executive Board of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary. The member became a member of the Judicial Council of Spain, which took over from the outgoing Judicial Council of Latvia. One of the agenda items was the approval of the Report on the Network's Activities for 2024-2025.
The ENCJ General Assembly was presented with a report evaluating the main project of the network - Independence & Accountability & Quality of Judiciary, resulting from the Judges' Independence Survey. It was carried out in both member and observer countries from January to March 2025. The General Assembly was also informed about the evaluation of the Digital Justice Forum project.
The representatives of the Councils for the Judiciary who participated in the General Assembly had a constructive discussion on the problems facing the Judiciary in their countries. They agreed that it is necessary to work on the resilience of the Judiciary, including professional training advancement. The rule of law includes many elements that go beyond the legality of the law. They also considered that the habit of remaining silent does not apply when the rule of law is under threat.
The ENCJ General Assembly, which is organized annually, adopted a Declaration in Riga that addresses not only the threat to the rule of law but also the measures necessary to eliminate it from the perspective of Judicial Councils and other similar bodies managing the Judiciary.
