The Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic elected a candidate for the President of the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic
The dominant agenda on the April´s session of the Judicial Council was the long-awaited election of a candidate for the President of the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic. The members of the Judicial Council devoted almost the entire first day of the session to it. The President of the Judicial Council, Marcela Kosová, announced the election for this important post at the beginning of January this year. She did so since the term of office of Ján Šikuta, who holds this post, expires on May 20, 2025.
The President of the Judicial Council received two proposals within the statutory deadline. Andrea Moravčíková, the current Vice-President of the Supreme Court, and František Mozner, the President of the Criminal Law Collegium from the same court, applied for this post. They both presented at the Judicial Council´s session on April 15, 2025. The election was preceded by a presentation of the candidates, during which they also presented their ideas about their tenure in this position. "The whole election was very dignified, we listened to both candidates in detail on the topics and issues that were of interest to the individual members. In the end, I also evaluated the presentation and the answers of both candidates very positively, I think that we managed it", commented the President of the Judicial Council, Marcela Kosová on the course of the election. The Judicial Council was finally convinced that František Mozner would be the most suitable candidate to hold the post of the President of the Supreme Court. 15 out of 17 members of the Judicial Council voted for him. "I definitely see this as a big commitment," said František Mozner shortly after the election.
The Judicial Council will now submit the successful candidate for appointment to the President of the Slovak Republic. "I believe that the President will appoint the winning candidate. František Mozner presented his goals realistically, knowing the environment of the Supreme Court, including what needs to be addressed as a matter of priority", concluded the President of the Judicial Council Marcela Kosová.
