The Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic will elect candidates for European judges again
Master's level law degree, at least 5 years of experience, integrity or clean moral character. These are a fraction of the requirements for a candidate for judge of the European Court of Human Rights for the Slovak Republic.
After the Government of the Slovak Republic did not approve the nominees for the judges of the European Court of Human Rights elected by the Judicial Council at its 40th session on 26th June 2024, Council´s President Marcela Kosová without undue delay announced a new election for these international judicial posts. "It's not pleasant, but we have to respect the process where at the beginning there is the Judicial Council, which chooses the candidates and forwards it to the government. The government is not just a 'postman', we all have a certain amount of responsibility in this process. If the Government of the Slovak Republic takes the view that a given candidate cannot be approved, the Judicial Council can only respect that and the President of the Judicial Council will announce a new election. I did just that today", says the President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, Marcela Kosová.
Applications of a candidates could be proposed to the Judicial Council until 30th August this year. "The announcement for this election includes clearly defined requirements that must be met by the candidate", says Marcela Kosová. She adds that the election itself will take place on Wednesday 18th September this year, starting at 09:00.
