The Judicial Council will again elect a candidate for the European Court of Human Rights for the Slovak Republic
The President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, Marcela Kosová, has announced on April 14, 2025 the election of three candidates who can stand for the post of judge at the European Court of Human Rights. The proposals for candidates should be submitted by 2 p.m. May 30, 2025. This step was made by the President of the Judicial Council immediately after receiving the news that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe had rejected the initial list of candidates, which was drawn up in June last year.
A candidate to serve as a judge of the ECtHR in the future must meet the strict requirements set out in the Slovak legal order. A judge should be an eminent personality in the field of law who also stands out for his or her moral qualities and integrity. The Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms also lays down further requirements for the candidate. Although these criteria are not part of the current legal order, they must be taken into account by eligible applicants as well as by specific candidates. The suitability of candidates is later decided by the Advisory Panel for the Selection of Candidates for Election as Judges of the European Court of Human Rights. A balanced representation of women and men in the Court is also required.
The actual election of the three candidates for this important international post will take place on 17 June 2025 at 09:00 a.m. at the seat of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic.
