The judges of the Central Slovak electoral district completed yesterday the election of one member of the judicial council. The President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, Marcela Kosová, announced this election at the beginning of September, taking into account the termination of the term of the then member Ján Gandžala. The total number of judges with the right to vote was 313, while 178 of them took the ballots, and in the end, there were 171 valid votes. Two candidates, judges of the Regional Court in Banská Bystrica, Miroslav Manďák and Štefan Novák, were heading to the Judicial Council. In the end, the first candidate - Miroslav Manďák  - was more successful and received 93 votes, which was 15 votes more than his opponent.

"I expected a close result, but in the end I'm very happy. I accept the fact that I am becoming a member of the judicial council with humility. I hope that I will not disappoint the judges that I will represent. Rather, on the contrary, I want to fulfill the ideas they put in me, I want to defend the interests of judges and the judiciary", said Miroslav Manďák , the new member of the Judicial Council,. He was proposed as a candidate for a member of the Judicial Council by the Council of Judges at the Regional Court in Banská Bystrica. During the announcement of the election results, he received the appointment decree from the Chairman of the Main Election Commission, Pavol Tomáš.
"We constantly face the challenge of increasing credibility in the impartiality of the Slovak judiciary. Being part of this body (Judicial Council) means that you can also contribute to the fact that the public can trust that court decisions and the functioning of the judiciary as such is independent. I firmly believe that you will fulfill your duties as a member of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic responsibly, conscientiously and honestly", said Pavol Tomáš during his speech.

"According to the Constitution, the Judicial Council should have 18 members. With the election of the ninth member elected by the judges, the number of members of the Judicial Council elected by the judges was completed. Unfortunately, we have been missing two members to be elected by the Parliament for more than half a year. Despite this, the Judicial Council is working and fulfilling its constitutional and legal obligations, but it is not an ideal situation. Because of this, we are missing, for example, one functional control commission, which is felt when examining judges and candidates for judges. We can only believe that this will change in a short time", said Marcela Kosová , the President of the Judicial Council.

Miroslav Manďák is a graduate of the Faculty of Law of the Comenius University in Bratislava. He has been working in the Department of Justice since 2002. Three years later, he was appointed to the position of judge. Currently, he is a judge of the Regional Court in Banská Bystrica with a membership in the Criminal Law Division. He became a valid member of the Judicial Council after the official announcement of the election results on November 7, 2024. The term of office of a member of the Judicial Council is 5 years.
