Three Slovak candidates are heading to the European Court of Human Rights
The European Court of Human Rights is an international court that consists of judges representing member states of the Council of Europe. The Slovak Republic is to elect three candidates for the position of judge in this system. From this list of candidates, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will subsequently elect one judge who will represent Slovakia for the next term of office. For the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, it is a long-lasting problem to configure this list of candidates in such a way that the government of the Slovak Republic subsequently approves it. The list of candidates was not approved in June of this year. The President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic therefore announced a new election for this important international post without undue delay. Authorized petitioners had the opportunity to submit proposals until August 30, 2024. Today it is already clear that a trio of candidates, consisting of Ondrej Laciak, Radoslav Procházka and Daniela Ježová, will present themselves before the Judicial Council.
The first of the candidates, Ondrej Laciak, was proposed by the Slovak Bar Association, the Association of Judges of Slovakia and the Chamber of Notaries of the Slovak Republic. Since 2016, he has been working as an ad hoc judge at the ECHR; he also holds the position of Chairman of the Committee for Criminal Law in the Council of European Bar Associations. Radoslav Procházka, who in the past also acted as a representative of the Slovak Republic before the courts of the European Union, was also proposed by the Slovak Bar Association and the Association of Judges of Slovakia. While both candidates applied for this post in the past, Daniela Ježová is the new candidate. She was proposed by the President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, Marcela Kosová. Currently, Daniela Ježová works as an attorney at law with experience in solving international legal issues and issues of the European Union.
The elections will take place on September 18, 2024, starting at 09:00 a.m.
