A foreign delegation visited the Judicial Council
Foreign judges and one prosecutor visited the seat of the Judicial Council. The purpose of the meeting was to learn more about the legal and judicial systems of the Slovak Republic. The President of the Judicial Council Marcela Kosová welcomed the foreign delegation. She considers communication with judges to be essential, and this case was no exception. She informed members of the delegation about the tasks and functioning of the Judicial Council. At the same time, she outlined the significant changes through which the Judicial Council is seeking to strengthen the position of judges in Slovakia. "I appreciate that members of the delegation were interested, for example, in the process that a candidate for judge must go through and the method of disciplinary proceedings against judges. Several foreign colleagues mentioned the important need for a two-tier disciplinary procedure, which they also have in their countries. I explained in detail the composition of the Judicial Council and its various powers, including its important role in vetting judges and candidates for judges," said Marcela Kosová.
The President of the Judicial Council also outlined the history of the development of disciplinary proceedings and the establishment of the Legislative Commission of the Judicial Council. Since July last year, it has been preparing proposals for legislative changes of laws regarding the judiciary, and the Judicial Council is thus making a significant contribution to the shaping of laws in Slovakia. The content of the expert debate was of a high professional standard. The President of the Judicial Council outlined not only the significant changes that have been implemented under her leadership in the past period, but also further plans for the future. The Judicial Council is taking steps to protect judges and uphold the principles of the rule of law, which was a great inspiration to many members of the delegation. At the end of the meeting, they were also given a tour of the premises and the history of the Vice Governor's Palace.
The Judicial Council has long supported the activities of the Judicial Academy. One of them is participation in exchange visits for judges and prosecutors from the European Union countries. This is the result of cooperation between the Judicial Academy and the European Judicial Training Network. The last visit was attended by eight judges and one prosecutor. They were the representatives of Spain, Croatia, Sweden, France, Germany, and Portugal.
