On 11 May 2026, the President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, Marcela Kosová, announced the election of a candidate for the position of judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union. Authorized proposers may submit their nominations until 11 June 2026.

In 2027, the mandate of Slovakia´s current representative at the Court of Justice of the European Union, Miroslav Gavalec, will end. He has served in this position since 7 October 2021.

A candidate for the position of judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union must fulfill the requirements prescribed by the legal system of the Slovak Republic. Judges and Advocates-General of the Court of Justice and the General Court are appointed by mutual agreement of the governments of the EU Member States after consultation with a committee established under Article 255 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (“Committee 255”), whose role is to give an opinion on candidates´ suitability to perform these duties.

Although the requirements set by Committee 255 are not formally part of Slovak law, they should be duly considered by authorized proposers and prospective candidates.

The election will take place on 11 August 2026 at 14:30, during the meeting of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic.
