Election of one candidate for judge at the European Court of Human Rights
Today, 2 September 2026, the President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic Marcela Kosová announced an election to complete the list of candidates for the position of judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in respect of the Slovak Republic. Eligible nominators may submit their nominations until 9 October 2026.
Although the Slovak Republic submitted a list of three candidates for the position of judge at the ECtHR, Branislav Jablonka, one of the candidates, withdrew his consent to his candidacy. Therefore, the list of candidates remains incomplete.
For this reason, the President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic announced a new election to fill the vacant place on the list of candidates. The election will take place on 10 November 2026 at 1:00 p.m., at the seat of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, Hlavné námestie 8, Bratislava.
“The term of office of Alena Poláčková as judge of the European Court of Human Rights in respect of the Slovak Republic expired on 28 December 2024, while she remained in office until 31 August 2025,” recalled Marcela Kosová, the President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic.
