Yesterday (August 5th, 2025), judges elected Vladimír Monok, a judge of the Regional Court in Prešov, as their new representative to the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic. The election took place at the assemblies of judges in the Eastern Slovak electoral district, which comprises the districts of the Regional Court in Košice, the Regional Court in Prešov, and the Administrative Court in Košice.

Out of a total of 352 judges entitled to vote in the Eastern Slovak electoral district for a member of the Judicial Council, 192 valid ballots were cast. Vladimír Monok was nominated as a candidate for a member of the Judicial Council by the Association of Judges of Slovakia, as well as by the judges of the Regional Court in Prešov.

The President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, Marcela Kosová, announced the election of a Judicial Council member by judges in the Eastern Slovak electoral district following the termination of the function of Judicial Council member Peter Farkaš. During today’s ceremonial announcement of the election results, Vladimír Monok received his appointment decree from the chairman of the main electoral commission, Pavol Tomáš.

“The Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic is continuously expanding its competencies, gaining strength and respect that it rightfully deserves. One of its most important tasks is to guarantee the independent position of the judiciary, without which it is impossible to speak of the rule of law and the protection of the rights of its citizens – the originators of state power. You can contribute to this and not only this goal as well,” Pavol Tomáš said during his speech addressed to the newly elected Judicial Council member.

“The judges of the Eastern Slovak electoral district approached the election of their representative responsibly and conscientiously. I appreciate their participation despite the holiday period, and I look forward to cooperating with the new member of the Judicial Council,” stated the President of the Judicial Council, Marcela Kosová.

Vladimír Monok thanked all the judges for their trust and said, “I will strive to perform my function as a member of the Judicial Council to the best of my ability. The number of votes I received, despite the holiday period and the fact that I was the only candidate, also commits me to this.”

The ceremonial event was also attended by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic, Milan Hodás, who said, “I see the Judicial Council as a very important partner in fulfilling our common goal of improving and increasing the credibility and strengthening the independence of the judiciary. It certainly does not please me that the Judicial Council has to face, I dare say, malicious and even hateful political and media attacks that seek to question its indisputable constitutional position.”

Vladimír Monok will participate in the August session of the Judicial Council.
