The Judicial Council will elect candidates for judges to the most important European Courts

For the Slovak Republic, it has been a long-standing problem to fill important international positions in European courts. According to the Constitution of the Slovak Republic, the competence of the Judicial Council also includes submitting proposals for candidates for judges to the Government of the Slovak Republic. These judges should act for Slovakia in international judicial bodies.  Last September, the Judicial Council elected three candidates for judges of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and one candidate for a judge of the General Court of the European Union and submitted them to the Government. The Slovak Government did not approve the submitted candidates at its meeting in April.

The Judicial Council will therefore once again elect three candidates for judge of the European Court of Human Rights and one candidate for judge of the General Court of the European Union. The deadline for submitting the candidates for both posts was  31st May. It is now known who will be standing for these important posts.

The Notary Chamber of the Slovak Republic, the Association of Judges of Slovakia and the Slovak Bar Association have proposed Ondrej Laciak as one of the candidates for judge of the European Court of Human Rights.  He has been an ad hoc judge at the court since 2016 and is also the chairman of the Criminal Law Committee of the Council of European Bar Associations.

Another candidate for this post is Radoslav Procházka. He has experience in the field of European law, for example, as a representative of the Slovak Republic before the European Union courts or as co-chair of the Working Group on Justice and Home Affairs within the National Convention of the Slovak Republic on the European Union.  He was nominated by the Slovak Judges Association, the Slovak Bar Association and member of the Judicial Council Mr. Lajos Mészáros.

Marcela Dolníková Žabková completes the trio of candidates for the post of judge of the European Court of Human Rights. She is currently a judge of the Žilina District Court and has completed a study stay directly at the Strasbourg-based court. She was nominated for this post by a member of the Judicial Council, Peter Šamko.

The only candidate for judge of the General Court of the European Union is Juraj Schwarcz, who has held this position since 2009. This is a joint proposal of the President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, Marcela Kosová, and members of the Judicial Council, Dana Jelinkova Dudzíková and Ľuboš Kunay.

The election of candidates for these important international judicial positions will take place at a meeting of the Judicial Council on 18th June this year.
