The delegation of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic visited the Court of Justice of the European Union from March 4 to 6, 2026. The visit was held at the highest level. The delegation of the Judicial Council, led by its President Marcela Kosová, was received by Koen Lenaerts, the President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Miroslav Gavalec, Judge at the Court of Justice of the EU, as well as Juraj Schwarcz and Beatrix Ricziová, Judges at the General Court of the EU.

As part of the official programme, the delegation of the Judicial Council also held meetings with Lenka Šenkárová, Legal Secretary to Judge Gavalec; Jan Passer, Judge of the Court of Justice; Katarína Andová, Attaché to the Registrar of the Court of Justice; and Branislav Kapala, Head of the Court Library Directorate.

One of the fundamental elements of the European identity is multilingualism. The Court of Justice uses 24 official languages and 552 possible language combinations. The Judicial Council delegation, therefore, also met with Naďa Daurel, Head of the Slovak Translation Unit.

“Ms. Daurel explained to us that the implementation of multilingualism has gradually required innovative solutions in translation and interpretation. It involves a carefully designed system based on a pre-established list of pivot languages and language combinations known in advance, where the original text is first translated into a pivot language and the pivot version is subsequently translated into other languages,” concluded Marcela Kosová.

As part of the programme, representatives of the Judicial Council also attended a hearing before the Second Chamber of the Court. It concerned a preliminary ruling procedure related to public procurement, in which Miroslav Gavalec acted as the Judge-Rapporteur.

In addition to the official ceremonial welcome, Koen Lenaerts subsequently held a personal discussion with the Judicial Council delegation.

“I greatly appreciate that the President of the Court of Justice received us and that we had the opportunity to speak with him not only about professional matters, but also in a more informal setting. The meeting with Mr. Lenaerts was very enriching and lively,” concluded the President of the Judicial Council, Marcela Kosová.
